Running Pace Calculator
Choose whether you know your pace or your goal finish time, enter a distance (or pick a common race distance), and get finish time, pace, and average speed all at once.
How It Works
Distance, pace, and time are all connected: finish time equals pace multiplied by distance, pace equals finish time divided by distance, and average speed equals distance divided by finish time (converted to a per-hour rate). This calculator takes whichever two values you know and computes the rest.
Worked Example
Running a 10K at a pace of 5 minutes 30 seconds per kilometer: pace in seconds is 5 x 60 + 30 = 330 seconds per km. Finish time = 330 x 10 = 3300 seconds, which is 55 minutes. Average speed = 10 km / (3300 / 3600 hours) = 10 / 0.9167 = 10.9 km/h.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the two modes?
The "I know my pace" mode takes a pace per kilometer or mile and a distance and works out your finish time. The "I know my finish time" mode takes a goal or actual finish time and a distance and works out the pace and average speed that produces.
Why do results show pace, time, and speed together?
Once distance and either pace or time are known, all three values (time, pace, and speed) are mathematically linked, so the calculator shows all of them regardless of which one you entered.
What distances do the quick-select buttons use?
They fill in the standard race distances: 5K (5 kilometers), 10K (10 kilometers), half marathon (21.0975 kilometers), and marathon (42.195 kilometers), converted automatically to miles if you are using imperial units.
Can I calculate pace for a distance that is not a standard race, like a training run?
Yes. Enter any distance directly in the distance field instead of using a quick-select button, in either kilometers or miles depending on your unit choice.
How is average speed calculated?
Average speed is distance divided by time, converted to a per-hour figure, so it is your distance covered per kilometer or mile, expressed as kilometers per hour or miles per hour.
